Back in December last year we were in Mexico for the holidays, our 4 year old Mateo started bruising on his legs and arms... 2 days after he had bruises all over his body inside his mouth, gums, lips... everywhere!!! We took him to the ER and that night he got diagnosed with leukemia... 2 days after, we drove all the way to Vegas 15 hours straight to the ER... got done blood work and sent home... they ask us to go back the next day (dec-30) 3 weeks later the doctor said it was ITP... a blood disorder... 3 weeks after he got Kawasaki... I've been reading that is most common getting Kawasaki and develop ITP... thank God the same treatment is for both conditions... and he's been fine since the IVIG treatment... the hematologist said he's getting more treatments since he's on aspirin and is a blood thinner... that can affect his platelets... just keep and eye on your kids if they start bruising and little red dots appear in their body that can be ITP... hope everything gets better whit my boy... he says daily this words: my name is Mateo and I'm a healthy boy...
Back in December last year we were in Mexico for the holidays our 4 year old...
My son got thrombocytopenia during Kawasaki disease and it continues to come back whenever he is sick (but not as severe of a drop). His lowest count was 12,000 I believe. It is very rare to have thrombocytopenia during Kawasaki disease, platelet counts are usually very high.
There is research on the combination of the two that suggest a more serious outcome when they occur together. My son did not have heart complications but sees a cardiologist for life because of the research of the two occurring together. No doctors have known about this. I had to provide them with the research.
I believe there are 2 or 3 other moms in the group whose little ones had this as well. So much unknown.
How scary to have that happen while away on vacation. I'm glad he is healthy again! Has the ITP come back at all since then? Do you know what number his platelets dropped to?
When we took him to the ER in Mexico he was at 7,000 and he had to stay, and got 2 platelets transfusions so we can have a safe trip back home...
Last time we went to the hematologist he was at 67000 and then Kawasaki hit him... and his first blood work during Kawasaki was 110000... his hematologist came and said everything was fine but he has to be treated now for the ITP... to make sure his platelets doesn't get to low again...
It's a little bit frustrating that they don't have an explication for both of them it seems like your kid is so lucky that this 2 conditions are very rare and he catch both of them...
I joke whit my husband and I say we should go and get Mateo a lotto ticket...
Two years ago my daughter got thrombocytopenia during KD too.
Doctor said that it was extremely rare case. The hospitalization period was like nightmare... low platelet, bruises....I was so depressed like crazy. However after two years, now she is VERY healthy 7 year old girl, who loves violin and swimming!
Prayers for your little boy and hope everything will be fine!!!
Glad to read that!!!
Thanks for the prayers...
I remember you were one of the other low platelet moms in the group.
