All cleaned up after a few hours. I've heard of the kips rattle but should it be that loud? Pulled the cover and the valve is working fine

  • its shit bro

  • The valve or the bike?

  • both good bro ride it len see

  • Alot louder than either of mine.that sounds like something coming apart.

  • Shane White oh oh haha yeah I thought the noise was at least semi normal. I actually had a friend look at it and he works at a Kawasaki dealer. Said its near mint. Took it for a spin today after coming off an xr250r it's a completely different animal. I like it a lot

  • sweet bro

  • Little info the previous owner got back to me and the top end is new as of 10 hours ago. I've heard KIPS can rattle more when the top end is new

  • When was the last time you did a top end?

  • That is way too excessive.i rebuild my top end every 30 hours and have never had it rattle like that.i would pull it apart and at least clean and inspect it.

  • How much does it cost you to do a top end?

  • Yeh sounds like top end to much piston slap, not power valve noise

  • Doesn't piston slap get worse with rpm?

  • Na just makes horrible noise like you have,it still rides?

  • Troy Horlock it's fast as hell it rides absolutely amazing

  • Previous owner was surprised. Supposedly the top end is new

  • 100 bucks.give or take.i only use wiseco forged pistons and athena gaskets.and really it can go without a rebuild for a long time.i had a 97 kdx 200 that i rode for five years with out touching it on a stock piston.i have a 97 220 now and the stock pistons were know to be junk.

  • Yeh well it can't be power valve then, would be gut less. Get top end redone noise will be gone. But to be honest better doing complete rebuild, lay two bikes I done top only a few rides later I'm doing bottom end.

  • Previous owner said the top end is new but who knows. I kinda think it's the kips but idk

  • If it was done before you then it's not been run in nicely,it's the thin skirt on piston giving the noise.

  • I have everything you can do done to this beast.ron black carb and head mod v force 3 reed cage fmf desert rev pipe the cyclinder has been ported and bored 1 mil over full race tech suspension with gold valves done by the kdx master jeff fredette.

  • Its definitely the power valves not piston slap.there are 2 barrel valves and 1 main valve in the middle with a trap door it sounds like the door or flap in the middle valve rattling.

  • Chris Neil how do I fix it?

  • I would pull the pipe off and head and clean inspect the valves.there are some vids on you tube you can check out.what year and size is your bike.i have a life time subscription to cyclepieda.i can send you some diagrams.

  • Chris Neil the previous owner got it from an impound lot so I'm unsure of the year because the vin is gone but I've been told it's a 00. It's a 200

  • Ok let me see what i can dig up for ya.

  • awesome! Thank you

  • I have a feeling its the main valve.there is like 20 pages so your best bet is to watch the kips vids on YouTube or get a subscription to cyclepieda.you can also join kdxrider.net.there is alot of good dudes on there with legit knowledge.

  • This is the main valve with a little flap or door on it.it is most likely the prob.

  • Ok will do! I've had a ton of people tell me it's piston slap so if I'm going to take the head apart I mind as well get a new piston right?

  • Sounds like piston slap to me too...either that or the primary drive/ clutch basket drive ain't been lined up correctly( hard to tell from the sound on the vid) measure your bore and piston before just throwing a new one in there. Kips is usually a rattle or vibration sound

  • I meant just the head not the cylinder.if you pull the head you can see the 2 barrel shaped valves.and pull the exhaust pipe and check your piston and rings and see if the cylinder is worn.

  • Tim Kawasaki .its definitely kips related you think.

  • I'd bet the farm on it.

  • If it was piston slap it would have went boom by now.lol

  • That's a big bet haha I'd go with KIPS related though it has way too much power to be eating itself. The compression is crazy high. I rode it for a half hour today and iTools the front wheel off the ground in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear so it's definitely not down on power

  • Yea thats another thing you can do if you have a compression tester is check it.my 220 has 175 psi but my head has been modded.im not sure what a 200 has.

  • 2004 about 60 hrs on it ,2002 has 25 hrs on it.no noise like that

  • Don't worry too much about it I've heard them worse than that and they still keep going so just ride it it's only a k d x

  • About 160 PSI will be ok I've seen them low and still keep going

  • Has one side brake on my 1 still was OK for a couple of months riding until I fixed it and had another old one stick open just had to clutch it a lot to get it to move but same thing just clean it up and fix it but you know by riding that if they're not working

  • Chris I sent you a riding video it's not much but you might be able to tell a little better

  • So a little update. Kips valve is working just fine. That's what was rattling. The spark plug was very loose too so there was a bit of knocking coming from that. She's much more quiet now and rips just fine.

  • Good I get to keep the farm. Lol
